Pūkeko are at home in wetlands, but have adapted well to modified landscapes and are often seen foraging on the side of roads and paddocks. They have deep blue plumage, white feathers under the tail, a red bill and are known for their lovely, long, red legs. Pūkeko are also found in other countries around the Pacific, unlike their stockier, flightless, endangered cousin the takahē.
